Abstract

This paper discussed the principles of minimal intervention dentistry (MID)-the current global gold standard for the management of dental caries- one of the most prevalent diseases in humans. A unique, in-depth, stepwise protocol for implementing MID in general dental practice and in dental education in resource-challenged environments was presented. The GC corporation’s 4 phased minimum intervention treatment plan (MITP) cyclical framework was broken down into its essential components- Identify, Prevent, Restore and Recall. Five types of MITP recalls were proposed and caries control and oral health outcome evaluation rating scales were introduced. This unique MITP implementation strategy also highlighted the roles of new diagnostic technologies, members of the dental team and limitations to MID implementation in resource-challenged dental practice environments.
